My problematic identity

I heard people talking on the corner about you.

They said that you are Puerto Rican. Yes, I have heard them mentioning that becasue for them being Puertorrican is a problem. It is a problem becasue you don't understand what being an immigrant is. Your mother does not have to get a VISA to visit the city, you are a citizen and are not afraid of the Migra. You have not even seen a "Green Card". You must have a good life. If not you are like most Puertorrican are, lazy. So you are not Latina or even an immigrant like them.

They said they found out you are Independentista. What a problem! They said how dare you wanting that Puerto Rico become independent from the United States even more knowing that Independentistas are a bunch of terrorist. They understand you do not value the opportunity of being part of the land of freedom and that if you were a real immigrant suffering inequalities in this country you would not mention the word Independencia for sure. They said something like "What? Have not she seen how poor are the rest of Latin America?"

People said in the corner that you are Hispanic. Yes, I have heard them mentioning that becasue for them being Hispanic is a problem. It is a problem becasue that might mean you have an accent and do not speak English as fluent as them. They do not know exactly where you come from, and they would not bother to find out either, but they know you are from somewhere else between Africa and down the border. They are not that far, actually. That's how they explain your darker color and your curly, exotic and rebel hear. Your hear make them think you do not come from an English, European, white and cold country, for sure.

I heard people saying you are a woman. Yes, I have heard them mentioning that becasue being a woman is a problem, specially, the kind of woman you are. They say how dare you talking alone with guys if you are married. They do not understand how your husband cook, clean and wash cloth while you are still working or maybe taking a nap. They say you are selfish. You care more about sex, self and immediate gratifications than having a real familiy and responsabilities, which means having two beautiful kids, a real strong macho husband and a house to take care of.

If there is a problem with you being Puertorrican, Independentista, Hispanic and a woman, they don't understand anything about you, I think. But leave it like that. Do not explain anything. That's what I did. I let them talking while I thougth about the way they were living, and if they were really enjoying their lives while judging you. I do not understand how your identity could bother them so much if you are just happy with the person you are.
