Sometimes I close my eyes and remember the days when the salty water and the sun kissed my skin. Now, I am so far away from the ocean and the sun, and close to the cold weather that some would say is better for me. The sun and the sea were so bad company, many people said, for the healthy hair and the pretty skin. They said that my hair would become dry and my skin darker. What a bad thing! Nevertheless, my hair and my skin appeared to be tied to the landscapes whenever I walked through the shores. They were, for sure, friends of the ocean. My curly hear move toward the wind and my skin was roasted by the sun as the island coffee that my mom prepared. Nothing was contradictory at all from a woman who loved the sea and swam between the colorful fishes.
Maybe I shouldn´t have been that much in the beach to keep the beauty standars. Maybe I should have gone to the hairdresser to strech my hair and stop going to the beach. Otherwise, my hair would become curly. Bad thing! Maybe I should have cut the end of my hair and color it more often. Maybe I should have gone to have my facial. Maybe I should have gone to the nail technician to do my nails and paint them with multiples colors. Maybe I should have spent more time going shopping to buy the latest clothing of the season.
However, any of those things would have replaced my natural Caribbean beauty. The sun wouldn´t have added a cinnamon color on my skin. I wouldn´t have enjoyed my natural nails and my hair roasted by the sun of the sea. I don´t change the beauty of the Caribbean for any other beauty standar, for any other standar from the north side of the world, from any other stndard based in gigantic malls and chain stores. I just prefer to look like I really am, like an islander, like a swimer, like a lover of the sea. I just prefer to look like the island, the sea, the sun and the wind.
